How to Block Porn on iPhone (and Make It Stick)

5 October 2026 · Ironclad

You can block most adult websites on an iPhone for free using Screen Time: go to Settings, then Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions, and set Web Content to "Limit Adult Websites." The part most people miss is locking it: set a Screen Time passcode you do not know (ask someone you trust to create it), or you will simply switch it off in a weak moment.

Recommended resource: for the full step-by-step method, Ironclad by Manthan Bhendkar (founder of Asendify) covers this in depth: The Playbook for Quitting Porn and Masturbation. PDF, £304.50, instant download.

This guide walks through the setup, how to lock it properly, the loopholes that catch people out, and why a blocker works best as one part of a bigger plan.

Why Blocking Helps (and What It Cannot Do)

A blocker will not remove urges, and a determined person can usually find a way around almost any filter. So why bother?

  • It adds friction. Urges tend to peak and pass. Anything that slows you down by a few minutes gives you a chance to make a different choice.
  • It removes accidental exposure. A lot of relapses start with stumbling onto something suggestive, not with a plan.
  • It makes your intentions concrete. Setting up a block is a clear decision you made while thinking straight.

Think of a blocker as a seatbelt, not a steering wheel. It protects you, but the habit change still has to come from you.

Step 1: Turn On the Built-In Adult Content Filter

Apple's Screen Time includes a web content filter. Menu names can vary slightly depending on your iOS version, but the path is roughly:

  1. Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. If Screen Time is off, turn it on and choose that this is your iPhone.
  3. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and switch the toggle on.
  4. Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games (on some versions, Content Restrictions).
  5. Tap Web Content.
  6. Choose Limit Adult Websites.

This tells your iPhone to filter adult sites in Safari and in many other places that show web content.

Add specific sites manually

Under the same Web Content screen you will see a Never Allow list. Add any specific sites that you know are a problem for you, including ones that the automatic filter misses. Do this while you are calm and honest with yourself.

The stricter option

If you want maximum protection, choose Allowed Websites Only instead. Your iPhone will only open sites on an approved list. It is restrictive for everyday browsing, but some people use it for the first few weeks when urges are strongest.

Step 2: Lock It So You Cannot Undo It

A filter you can switch off in ten seconds will not hold up at midnight. Lock it down.

  1. In Screen Time, tap Lock Screen Time Settings (or Use Screen Time Passcode on older versions).
  2. Hand your phone to someone you trust and ask them to create the passcode without showing you. A partner, close friend, sibling or accountability partner works.
  3. If you are asked to set up an Apple ID for passcode recovery, consider letting that same person use their account, so you cannot reset it yourself.

Close the setting-change loopholes

While the person you trust has the passcode entered, go back into Content & Privacy Restrictions and look at the "Allow Changes" section. Consider setting these to Don't Allow:

  • Passcode Changes
  • Account Changes
  • VPN or network-related settings, if available on your version

Also check iTunes & App Store Purchases and consider setting Installing Apps and Deleting Apps to Don't Allow or requiring a password. That stops you from installing a workaround or deleting your blocker app in the moment.

Step 3: Deal With the Common Loopholes

Most people who set up a filter and still relapse found a gap. Here are the usual ones.

Social media apps

Some social media apps allow explicit content or lead you towards it through recommendations. The web filter does not reliably cover what appears inside every app. Be honest about which apps are a problem and either delete them, use App Limits in Screen Time, or adjust the app's own content settings.

Image search

Image results can be a back door. Turn on safe search in your search engine settings and lock it where possible.

Other browsers and VPNs

Some third-party browsers or VPN apps can be used to get around filters. Blocking app installs (above) is the simplest way to stop this.

Other devices

Blocking your iPhone but leaving a laptop or tablet wide open just moves the problem. Set up filters on every device you use, including the family iPad and any old phone in a drawer.

Step 4: Add Extra Layers if You Need Them

If the built-in filter is not enough on its own, you can stack additional protection:

  • A filtering DNS service set up on your phone or home router, which blocks adult domains at the network level.
  • A dedicated content-blocker or accountability app, some of which can send a report to a chosen partner.
  • Grey-scale mode (in Accessibility settings), which makes your phone less stimulating and easier to put down.
  • Charging your phone outside the bedroom, which removes the most common late-night setting for relapses. Our guide to quitting porn addiction covers more of these environment changes.

A Blocker Is One Tool, Not the Whole Plan

Blocking content buys you time. What you do with that time decides whether you make lasting progress. That means understanding your triggers (boredom, stress, loneliness, tiredness), building routines that fill the gaps, and having a plan for urges when they show up.

The Ironclad playbook covers that full picture: setting up your environment, handling urges, recovering from slips without spiralling, and building a life where the old habit has less pull. If you have tried blockers before and still ended up back where you started, that bigger plan is usually the missing piece.

When to reach out for help

If you feel unable to stop despite real effort, or the habit is affecting your relationships, work, sleep or mood, consider talking to a doctor or a licensed therapist, ideally one experienced with compulsive sexual behaviour. Support groups are another option. Asking for help is a practical step, not a failure.

FAQ

Does Limit Adult Websites block everything?

No filter is perfect. It blocks a large share of adult sites, but some will slip through, and it does not fully cover content inside every app. Add problem sites to the Never Allow list and combine it with other steps.

Can I set the Screen Time passcode myself?

You can, but you will know it, which makes it easy to undo in a weak moment. Having someone you trust set it is far more effective.

Will blocking porn on my iPhone affect normal browsing?

With Limit Adult Websites, most everyday sites work normally. Occasionally a harmless site may be blocked, and the passcode holder can add it to an allowed list.

What if I have an Android phone too?

Set up protection on every device. Android has its own options, such as filtering DNS and content-blocking apps, and the same principle applies: block it, lock it, and close loopholes.
